Position: Transportation Director

Summary of Position:

  • Accountable to Administrator and Regional Director of Transportation
     

Responsibilities:

  • The Transportation Director is responsible for scheduling and coordinating transportation; scheduling and supervising vehicle maintenance; supervising drivers; running center errands; transporting participants to medical appointments and serving as a substitute driver. Responsibilities include:
    1. Scheduling transportation for all new program admissions;
    2. Scheduling and coordinating a weekly transportation schedule;
    3. Providing weekly transportation schedule to the Administrator at least by Wednesday of the week preceding the schedule for review;
    4. Upon approval of the Administrator notifying family caregivers of changes in transportation scheduling by Friday of the week preceding the schedule change.
    5. Notifying drivers of transportation schedule changes and providing them with instruction regarding routing at least by Friday of the week preceding the change.
    6. Scheduling all preventative vehicle maintenance and insuring that vehicle maintenance is performed in a timely manner and to safety standards;
    7. Scheduling all emergency vehicle maintenance as needed;
    8. Insuring that vehicles that are “down” for maintenance are returned in a timely manner to use by the Center;
    9. Insuring that all vehicles are clean and contain emergency equipment; spill kit first aid box;
    10. Supervise all drivers and provide on the road spot checks to assess driving performance;
    11. Advise Administrator of changes which are needed in transportation procedures;
    12. Inform drivers of any changes in transportation policies or procedures;
    13. Run center errands which may include shopping, post office, etc.
    14. Transport participants to medical appointments as requested by the Administrator;
    15. Serve as a substitute driver during driver absenteeism or during periods when a driver position is vacant;
    16. Report to the Administrator immediately any problems with vehicle maintenance or driver performance;
    17. Assist in the interview of prospective drivers and make recommendations to the Administrator and Regional Director of Transportation regarding same;
    18. Together with the Administrator and Regional Director of Transportation, complete driver performance evaluations;
    19. Coordinate and assist in the emergency evacuation of participants if inclement weather (e.g., a blizzard) is threatened or if there is a power failure or other reason that the Center must close during program hours;
    20. Coordinate driver emergencies en route with emergency assistance.
    21. Assist in the quality assurance of the Transportation Department
    22. Attend Director’s and staff meetings as scheduled.
    23. Maintain a list of vendor (gas stations, maintenance providers) names and phone numbers.
    24. Provide the drivers with a daily vehicle inspection/safety checklist.
    25. Maintain key box containing vehicle keys (including spare keys).
       

Qualifications:

  • General – Certified by a New Jersey licensed physician within 45 days of employment to be in good health including freedom from drug or alcohol abuse and from communicable disease, including Tuberculosis in the communicable form, according to acceptable screening methods of the Dept. of HRS.
     
  • Education / Experience – Must have high school diploma, a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and a “no point” driving record verified by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. Prior experience in transportation scheduling and supervision of vehicle maintenance preferred.
     
  • Abilities – In addition to the responsibilities detailed in this job description, the Transportation Director must be able to:
    1. Understand the needs of the elderly and, in particular, the needs of those with cognitive impairments (memory problems, confusion, disorientation);
    2. Be sensitive to the needs of family caregivers;
    3. Be available to work unscheduled days and hours;
    4. Demonstrate good communication skills;
    5. Demonstrate knowledge of routing and of roadways in the 2nd Home service area;
    6. Demonstrate the ability to read and to understand a road map;
    7. Make a commitment to cooperative performance to attain care, organization and programmatic objectives which may entail performing duties not included in this job description.
